New Year – New Record

We’re hoping for a happy New Year for women in business, as 2012 kicks off with a record number of female CEOs at the nation’s top 500 public companies. This week, IBM's Virginia Rommety moves into her new role as CEO, as does Mylan Inc.'s new CEO Heather Bresch.

In all – the year begins with 18 female CEOs, beating the previous record of 16 in 2011.

It may be an anti-drug campaign, but it ought to be a moniker for career women, too.

At a recent function, when I asked the CFO of a Fortune 100 how she was doing, she said, "I'm exhausted. I can't seem to say 'no.'" It's a common affliction among successful women. In our zeal to help and please others, promote our companies and get everything done, when requests come in, it seems better to say yes.’

'Men Working' Leaves Half the World Out

My son Alden called me at work one morning recently. He wanted to know my thoughts about the word "mankind" and whether it's OK to use the term in an essay. So I blurted out, "Not if you don't want to exclude more than half of the human race!" Only then did I learn I was on the speaker-phone with other students in the principal's office listening. So I asked the boys in the room the question: "Would you feel left out if you were referred to as part of 'womankind?'" The answer was, of course, yes.
