Five Tips for Landing Your Dream Job

It’s easy to get lost in a daydream, especially on those working days that just seem to drag and drag. We put our head in our hands, look out of the window, and wonder just when oh when will we have a job that we love to do. It’s a nice, albeit sometimes depressing daydream to have; but here’s the thing: does it have to stay as a daydream? With a bit of drive and belief, you could find yourself in your dream job sooner than you think. Here’s how you go about making it yours.

Believe it Exists
Your employment dreams are going to remain just that – dreams – if you don’t believe that it’s out there waiting for you somewhere. It’s one thing not to know what type of job would bring you joy. It’s another thing entirely to know that the job exists, but you don’t think you’re talented or whatever enough to do it. The only people who end up exactly where they want to be are the ones who stayed determined to reach their goals, even when there were obstacles to overcome. Eliminate your self-doubts, and you can never know where you’ll end up.

Put the Time In
Belief is a crucial ingredient when it comes to being the best version of ourselves, but the bulk of the work is taken up by effort. If you’re not willing to work to land your dream job, then close this browser, because it’ll never happen. However, if you’re happy to accept internships, take an additional course, network with the movers and shakers that can make things happen for you, and so on, then you’ll be putting yourself on the right path towards success. You’re going to be competing with many other people who want to reach their dream job: how badly do you want it?

Tailor Your Applications
You’ll have applied for jobs before. You’ll have all your credentials written down on paper, have a few generic cover letters stored away on your computer, and so on. But remember: you’re not applying to any old job anymore. Now, we’re talking about your dream job, and your application is going to deserve all the attention that that title deserves. So tailor your application to the job; use one of the available job specific CV templates, put considerable time into your cover letter, and stay in dialogue with the recruiters after you’ve submitted your application. You need to show that you really want this position; by doing the above, you’ll have shown that you do.

Be Prepared to Start Small
No-one walks into their dream job at the first time of asking, especially if it involves switching industries. As such, you’ll need to be prepared to start small. You might find yourself doing a job that isn’t exactly what you want, but which may eventually lead to where you want to be. Be patient, do your best, and act as if you were your dream job; then, one day, that position will come.
