From new clients to news coverage, it’s a no-brainer that being involved with your community is a great way to boost small business growth.

But what’s the best way to give back – and make sure everybody wins?

“Giving is rewarding and it can also lead to good things,” says Alice Heiman of Alice Heiman LLC.

She’s a recent recipient of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Blue Ribbon Small Business Award for her role in economic growth and community commitment.

Giving back gave Heiman exposure through awards. She says it helped her to build trusting relationships with people from organizations and the community who

became long-term clients. “It’s important for small businesses to be visible in the community through sponsorships, networking and volunteer work.”

How can you choose what to support? Pick projects to learn new skills and consider a position on a nonprofit board, says Heiman.

However, “Once people know your strengths you'll get lots of requests to volunteer your time and talent,” she warns. “People will take advantage of your kindness, so you have to set limits.”

Instead of saying no, you can simply ask to be contacted again next year.
