Winning Over the Boss

ImageYou’ve had it highlighted on your Smartphone calendar, bolded on your desktop and even scheduled a reminder email for yourself. But now the boss’ birthday is just around the corner and you’re still stumped on what would make the perfect gift.

Don’t worry: PINK compiled a simple gift guide to keep you on the boss's good side.

“When in doubt, get something functional (vs. decorative or abstract) that your boss can actually use either in or outside of the workplace,” says Marcia Miller, CEO of gift company Mud Pie. “The closeness of your relationship should guide just how personal the gift should be.”

If your boss is a foodie, try a gift certificate to the newest buzz-worthy local restaurant. If she’s a traveler, how about a classy passport holder or this nifty pen with built-in paper?

Think she could use a refreshing bit of me-time? You can’t really go wrong with a spa certificate.

Not sure about the perfect present for a male boss? Miller suggests thinking about his hobbies. If he's an avid reader, check out a book about trends in his industry. If his water cooler asides always include athletics, consider apparel from his favorite sports team.

Boss's Gift

My Boss was diagnosed with kidney cancer a couple years ago. It has since been sucessfully removed but that year I started making a donation in his honor to the American Cancer Society for Christmas. That has been a big hit with him. There are a lot of non profits that can process gift donations and often provide a very nice card.

The gift that won over my boss

My boss is not a very "personal" guy. All communication is short and sweet, and he keeps his personal life on the low down. Not always the easiest guy to make a connection with, however we have had our shining moments. I know my boundries, and that my extroverted personality needs to be tempered when were together, so that I don't overwhlem him.

I knew I would see my boss on his birthday, but he would not want me to make a fuss about it. So I emailed his secretary and asked her what his favorite snack food was. She's fantastic and replied right away.

The next day, I handed my boss a 99 cent bag of DAVID sunflower seeds. His favorite. His was surprised, pleased, and thankfull. I can just imagine him chewing the seeds and spitting the shells out of his car window on his way home from the office that day.
