Need A Lawyer? Make Sure You Read This First

Most of us need a lawyer at some point in our lives. It could be for a happy occasion, such as buying a new home or creating a prenuptial agreement. Or it could be for something distressing like estate management or an injury. Whatever your reason for seeking the services of a solicitor, read our advice first.

  1. Seek Recommendations

If you’re in need of legal help, ask your friends and family for recommendations. It’s likely that someone has gone through a similar experience, and they have done the legwork. Recommendations create trust and tell you much more than a website or brochure.

But it’s important not to make your decision based solely on someone else’s point of view. Everyone has different priorities and deals with things in different ways. Meet with the potential lawyer first and see if it is a good fit.

  1. Find A Specialist

When looking for legal services, find a specialist. For example, if you’re getting a divorce look for a divorce lawyer. If you’ve had an accident, find a personal injury lawyer, etc. Avoid the jack of all trades approach and work with someone who knows their stuff.

  1. Ask For Testimonials

Before you commit to anything, ask to see testimonials. This may not be as reliable as a personal recommendation, but it will help you determine the type of business you’re working with.

  1. Ask Questions

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Clarify how many similar issues they have dealt with. Ask about the percentage of wins and losses. Check their credentials and ensure they have been admitted to the bar. Also, find out about their specialization. Ask for a breakdown of all likely costs so there will be no surprises.

Another good question to ask if whether they have any questions for you. A good lawyer will be focused on their client.

  1. Legal Referrals

If you have used the services of a lawyer for a different matter, ask them for recommendations. They will be aware of the firms operating in your locality. They are in a good position to make a recommendation for you.

  1. Arrange A Meeting

Before making a decision, arrange a meeting. Make an appointment to meet the lawyer and talk about your legal issues. This is your opportunity to make up your mind as to whether you could work together. Feeling comfortable with that person is important, especially if the issue is complex. You will also get an idea of how knowledgeable they are.

  1. Prevention

It’s easy to say this in hindsight, but many legal disputes can be avoided. If you’re unsure about a legal matter, also seek advice. For example, if you’re launching a business and taking on staff. Or, if you’re writing a will. The legal fees are likely to be much less than defending a dispute at a later stage.

The next time you need some legal assistance, go through these checks before making a decision. Personality and charisma go a long way. But make sure you don’t rely on those qualities only. Do the legwork and carry out some research. It may help you to avoid a costly mistake.
