Right or Rude?

Securing a position that fits your goals and needs is challenging but, with all of the available talent in this economy, keeping it may be even tougher. Making the right first impression is essential.

Etiquette, believe it or not, plays a large role in how others evaluate you. The ladies at Right or Rude, where manners matter, offer up four suggestions to help ensure your new colleagues get the right feel for you.

Be on Time.
It goes without saying but being on time on the first day of work is one of the most important things to do. This is your first impression and it will send a message about what can be expected of you and the effort you put into your work.

Dress appropriately.
Depending on the field you work in this might mean different things. Some offices are more casual than others. However, it is not always about business vs. casual.

Consider the coworker that always wears a short pencil skirt, high heels and blazer. You might think this is right, but would you feel the same way if we told you this woman also lives in New York City and wore this outfit the day of a blizzard? People would remember her as the “crazy girl that doesn’t wear a coat during winter.” Not a good thing.

Also, say no to open-toe shoes, sandals and flats. It is proven that high-heel shoes improve posture and help us to stand up straight. With this comes increased confidence and a presence that demands attention. Invest in a good pair of kittens, sling backs or Mary Janes in a classic color

Introduce yourself to everyone.
Letting people put a face to your name is a great way to break the ice and make friends. Show your new coworkers you are friendly, outgoing and approachable. It will go a long way in making the transition smoother and build relationships with your new team.

Maintain a professional attitude.
Watch and learn. Each office environment is different and so will the nature of the relationships and way of communicating between each person. Pay attention to form of conversation and level of formality. You shouldn’t join in the heavy jokes or bad word usage, even if others do, but it will give you a better idea on how to behave.

And, remember to always put your best heel forward.
