Three Java Free Pick Me Ups

Ever wonder why the guys at the office are so quiet before 11 a.m.?

According to Harvard research, women are naturally morning people. Our circadian rhythm (inner clock) runs at a faster pace. In fact, more than one in three women complete a daily cycle in less than 24 hours.

Still, 90 percent of women ages 18 to 34 consume around two cups of coffee per day.

And, while the popular morning pick-me-up can be a good source of antioxidants, it’s also loaded with caffeine – a source of disruptions in sleep patterns and focus-disabling jitters for some.

“Substituting coffee with other natural energy boosters, such as seltzer, club soda or bubbly water with a squeeze of citrus juice is a better alternative,” says Dr. Lisa Ganjhu, a gastroenterologist specializing in advising patients about eating and nutrition habits.

“Hot water with a squeeze of lemon or lime juice is also a good alternative,” Ganjhu tells PINK.

Mint or herbal teas come in many flavors and can also offer a caffeine-free morning jolt. Sweeten with cane sugar, honey, agave or stevia.

Nutritionist Margaux Rathbun shares this recipe for energizing apple juice.

“You’ll need one red delicious apple, three organic carrots, a one-inch piece of ginger and a sprig of mint,” says Rathbun. Add these ingredients to your juicer and process until smooth.

“It’s loaded with nutrients that will help nourish your body while sustaining your energy levels throughout the day,” she says.

With a bite of breakfast to prevent your blood sugar from dropping, you won’t miss the caffeine and your body will thank you for it.
